Digital Game Development for Educators Ideas
A PBDE course in digital educational game design this fall (Wed evenings from 5:30 - 8:30). This is a pedagogy course, not a technical course.
EDUB 5220 Recent Developments in CTL 1: Digital Game Design for Educators (3 credits)
Instructors: Dr. Reynold Redekopp & Dr. Kalanda Kasongo
Description: This course examines elements of digital game design in relation to education theory and practice. Participants work towards creating the parameters of an educational game related to their curricular area. Elements to be considered include:game play, story, goals, scaffolding, characters, setting, rewards, curricular objectives, among others. In particular, the course looks for depth of meaning and ability to transfer skills. Participants also examine the literature around cultural assumptions ingames, the use of games, and the role of the teacher in educational gaming.

Course goals
- This course provides an overview of digital games from an interdisciplinary perspective, including as a cultural artifact, a cornerstone of youth culture, an economic powerhouse, an educational tool, and a driver of technical innovation.
- This course introduces you to a variety of game genres, and discusses the social, economic, and technical impact of these genres.
- This course explores the design process for digital games.
- This course explores social and structural issues within games and game-playing behavior.
At the conclusion of the class, students will be able to:
- Describe the importance of games as an Educational, and cultural artifact, especially with respect to other genres.
- Describe the importance of games as a driver of technological innovation.
- Describe how societal norms are reflected in game design.
- Evaluate different gaming populations and make design recommendations appropriate for those (potential) players.
- Identify and explain core principles of online interaction and communication.
- Describe issues of identity and representation within games and game-playing communities.
